Coldfusion stores Data source definitions here

Coldfusion server reinstallation or cloning is a common scenario however if your server is the type with multiple data sources, recreating those DSNs could be hell on earth - especially when you have a world cup match to watch.

All you need do is back-up of CFROOT\runtime\bin\neo-datasources.xml. This XML file is where CF stores the data source settings for all DSNs. Mind you, the passwords are encrypted.

Questions for Brian Greene

I recently bought the Elegant Universe, a great book by Brian Greene. He tried his very best to distil String Theory and other mad cap science into what an average Joe could understand. I understand (well, I think I do) what he wrote but I have more questions than answers so I did what should be the right thing, I wrote him an email:

Dear Brian,

I recently read your book, The Elegant Universe and I must say, with the few things I learned, even if they dont really resonate with me, I can spend a dinner with a bunch of physicists without falling asleep from boredom. However, I would be happy if I could get answers to some nagging questions:

Based on the big bang theory, if the universe started from the big bang about 15billion years ago, and has been expanding since (with some theories about its contraction happening after, but then both of us would have been long gone, it is not an event that I look forward to), what was the state of the universe a year before the big bang? Or a billion before then? Where did all those matter come from?

If for about 300 years, the classical physicists felt they were right and then Einstein blew them off and then string theory is stringing Einstein up, do you think String theory could hold up forever?

Is it possible that there could be a form of life inside the sub particles?

Is it possible that the components of the whole universe are like sub particles? May be we are the makeup of a giant body!

I would love your take on those questions.

Digging Deep

The world is currently faced with energy challenges: oil reserves are being depleted at an unprecedented rate and depending on which statistic you use, we could run out of gas (literally) within the next 100 years. Renewable sources are not enough or difficult to harness. Nuclear power is extremely tricky to play with and the repercussions of misuse can last for generations. Cold fusion is currently the stuff of science fiction. We are living on borrowed times.

Apart from major hydroelectric schemes (Itaipu, Three Gorges, Aswan, Hoover, etc.) most of electricity consumed are made from turbines. Water is heated to super critical temperature and pressurized. The resultant steam is used to drive big turbines that produce electricity for use by industry and consumers. So the biggest need for a power generation system is a sustainable heat source. Currently controlled nuclear reaction, burning of gas and other fossil fuels, burning of coal, etc. produce the required heat.

The other major challenge posed by power generation has been the dangerous environmental after taste. The sourcing of the required input (oil, coal) and the running of these stations (nuclear waste, carbon dioxide, acid rain) have exposed everyone in the world to an impending climate disaster. So there is also a need to balance out these effects by looking for green energy sources. That is where we ran into a brick wall. There are no green and realistic sources of energy. Solar panels are very expensive and the efficiency is still at the very low levels. Cold fusion is still a technical mirage. Harnessing the ocean waves have been disappointing.

But what about digging deep?

Basic geography shows that the deeper you dig into the earth the hotter is becomes (and the more pressure too). Some measure it as .7 degree centigrade per every mile journeyed downward. The idea is this, what if we dig deep enough to reach a very high temperature and instead of using water, we could create some synthetic fluid with specialized features such as low boiling point whose vapor has the required pressure characteristics. All we need do is pump such fluid into the ground, get it heated up and it comes back up as highly pressurized gas which can be used to drive turbines for electricity production. At least there is a never ending supply of heat.

It sounds simplistic albeit it is probably packed with enough complexity to make scientists think rocket science is junior level arithmetics. However, the whole idea is to look inward to the unending (basically) power stored in the earth crust. If this can be achieved, the concept of energy generation would change forever. Cheap energy should put 100% electric vehicles on the road and if technology comes to the rescue, we could even have batteries that could charge fully in 5 minutes.

Behavioral finance and the science of voodoo

I just had some argument with a PhD researcher about the value of behavioral models over the up-till-now traditional financial modeling. You see, behavioral finance is a growing field of financial science and came into prominence after the last catastrophic implosion of the global financial market. Obviously some greedy folks went berserk and all the fancy market models developed to understand them were obviously on vacation (read Fama, French, Sharpe, Markowitz, Merton Miller and a bunch of others. I can't even imagine that some people actually got a Nobel for this type of rubbish. In a world where Obama can get a Nobel for Peace in anticipation of peace, anything can happen!).

From the behavioral finance people's point of view, financial and capital models are crap and can't model how the financial world will behave as it is based on what is called the rational model (players will behave according to expectation) but can't understand the primordial human instincts (greed, fear, ego, etc.) which ultimately always upturn things.

This is actual bone of contention. We both agreed that the current models are capital BS but I believe that the financial and capital behavior can be modeled. What we don't have now is enough attributes to put into the model to factor things in. Another thing is to redefine what a rational attribute is. Purchasing an equity based on PE ratio is a rational behavior but it doesn't even rank as much as buying because of fear! Or why would the experts spend so much time wondering that the Weekend Effect is all about?

This is what luxury good purveyors have known for centuries, people don't buy because a purchase makes sense, they buy for all manners of reasons and that is what we modeler need to figure out.

Can fear be modeled? Yeah! Same for herd behavior, for greed, for revenge, etc. What I dont know is if a smart dude is going to figure it out in a year, decade or century but I can put my bet on 2 decades out there. What do you think we are going to use all those powerful computers to do? Turn them into Precogs while the world reenact Minority Report. So between now and then, I will advice my fancy research to go find another job; behavioral finance career is about to hit a dead end.

The economy of enforcement

Lagos is a mad place. Chaos incorporated. Although that isn't enough to make me do the Andrew Method (run away) . Apart from security and electricity, traffic is the biggest problem we have. It takes X number of hours to move from point A to B. I know that LASTMA was created to solve this problem but they are more interested in shafting drivers than resolving the road logjam. But that is a story for another day or symposium like Abami Eda would say.

Another tangent to this post is that all tiers of government are broke, my dear Lagos inclusive. Fashola is rolling out tax laws faster than Usain Bolt could complete a 100m dash. That itself hasn’t worked well.

Talking about the traffic palaver, even though we have bad roads, 80% (don’t ask for the source of data!) of the gridlock is caused by bad drivers: Danfo drivers picking passengers; vehicles moving against traffic; impatient drivers not giving way at junctions, etc.

It came to me that government could augment its income with loads of law breakers roaming the street. I know LASTMA has gotten away with not doing much because government wasn’t expecting much from them. But say LASTMA has a target of catching 5,000 offenders a day with average fine of 10,000. That is some 50M per day and almost a billion in one month. Well, maybe that is an exaggeration but come on, if LASTMA can generate enough fines to pay for its officers, what is wrong with that? When people know that the cost of breaking a traffic offence is so much, they start behaving and then traffic is better and ultimately there is going to be need for fewer LASTMA officers.

Same crooked (smile) idea could be applied to building codes (those converted shops cause more evils that you can imagine) and to companies messing up the environment. Think of the glee of fining offices that block drainages with N100K or the premises get locked down. When it becomes so expensive to break the law, the government can spend less money unblocking those drainages.

And hopefully, they would have more money to pave the road and a smooth road makes it easier to escape LASTMA in case I get caught. Now, I think you get the point.

Will the database move into the cloud?

In 1999 when senior vice president Marc Benioff left Oracle to create Salesforce.com, many thought he was headed for a cliff at full steam but 10 years down the line, software as a service (SaaS) is a matured business model. Online productivity applications have joined the fray and are maturing at a brisk pace (Say Google Docs, Zoho).

In our modern enterprise, the database is a corner of most of the software architecture and I ask myself, will the database move into the cloud too? Will I be able to implement applications and point it to a database somewhere unknown?

The benefits are obvious – zero hardware configurations, zero backups (hey, I could spend a million dollars for that!), titanium grade security protection, etc. But should things fail, I have loss of data staring me in the face. With that I could get a jail time or be bankrupt depending on what data is missing.

Nokia is definitely the largest maker of any type of phone in the world, from the penny pinching Nokia 1100 to the super sexy N900, the mainframe of smartphones. While market penetration is good with the cheaper phones, the more expensive smartphones offer more profit margins.

Look at it this way, in Nigeria the cheapest of Nokia phones go for about N3,900 ($26) retail price from which Nokia, the distributor and retailers must have eke out their profit. I can only imagine how much each can get out of that phone: It is probably a game of numbers. The bread and butter is from the more expensive phones. Analysts have opined that Nokia makes as much as 25% margin on the more expensive phones. Generally profit margins on smart phones that can play movies and send e-mails can be 10 percentage points higher than standard devices.

Energy crisis has never been worse in Nigeria than now. power stations are comatose, the government is reversing itself in all possible directions and no one knows what is going to happen the next minute.

Earlier in the administration of Bola Tinubu of Lagos State, he pioneered the concept of independent power stations but because these depended on gas from NNPC, it was easy for the laudable project to get sabotaged by the Obasanjo lead government. Also, other power stations built by the Federal Government have met tragic fates from gas supplies.

Recent technological advances in wind powered turbines have made the cost of construction of such wind farms comparable to what it cost to build a similar gas powered station. A recent survey by Business Week magazines puts the cost of a 150MW at roughly $225 million. So it means if the Lagos State Government could raise $675 million, say from the capital market, it would be able to build a 450MW power station to run the state, free from the shackles of NNPC.

Great organizations are known to have great leaders. They define the direction and determine what is important, the culture and the future of their domain.

Until the leadership of an organization knows the benefits of creating an efficient system and work towards it, efforts by the underlings would never amount to anything. Sometimes it is easy to go for strategic meetings (very boring meetings!), create policy documents but until words can be matched with action, nothing comes out of it. [More]

What makes a smart organization

Of recent, I have been thinking deeply about what makes an organization to be smart. Or deeper still, what defines a smart organization. I am thinking about real life attributes not some fancy buzz words from smart pants consultants.

If someone should ask me, I would say a smart organization is one that reacts quickly to market changes, whose components (resources, employees) are used in the most cost effective manner delivering above average return on investment. So a lot must be expected from each organizational unit. Assets must be deployed in the most cost effective manner and results must be squeezed out. These are just rambling thoughts but one day, I will come around to codify it.

Why should we have smart organizations? My own answer is so simply stupid: It makes employees happy! From my little life experiences, the workers are the first to get stressed up when things don't go smoothly. Like some people I know will say, they willl "Fi eje se!" (use blood to run it!). If things can run faster, better, more efficiently with less input and more time to either party away (Friday night is sacrosanct) and do better things, I should be less stressed up.
December 31 FYE: Implications for the Nigerian banks

Not only are Nospetco accounts frozen by EFCC, I also heard that the cousin schemes: Sefteg, Wealthsolutions, Treasure Lines also got the deep freezer treatment. [More]

Adobe RIA Conference in Nigeria

At last, the RIA beam has been focused on Nigeria.

The Nigerian Adobe User Group would be doing an RIA conference to discuss and showcase what we Nigerian's got to offer. ColdFusion and Flex are going to get serious scrutiny. I also heard that some bits of Apollo would be revealed. The conference would be from January 19 to 21 2007 at Yaba College of Technology (But I gotta go to church!).

For those who don't know, RIA stands for Rich Internet Applications, which is Adobe's cut for the Web 2.0 paradigm. In all honesty, Adobe has been on the RIA stuff before the Web 2.0 apostles got their celestial callings.

And the Windows XP Pro on it makes me feel like crying when it's time to act up. [More]

At last, Google has launched a beta program showcasing its Writely (online document editor) acquisition and an online spreadsheet. But the missing gap is linking this with Gmail. Writing well formatted emails on Gmail is not for the faint hearted as at its best, it is terribly simplistic. Also, when is Gmail going to allows us send text messages...? May be free! Am just day dreaming.
Bill Gates in Nigeria

Bill Gates came to Nigeria over the weekend to discuss with "Baba Iyabo" on how to eradicate HIV/AIDS and poverty. For me, what I would love most is if Bill could institute a free tuition technological college in Nigeria. Education, though a slow one, is the best means of eradicating poverty in a nation. Check the poorest countries, and you would see countries of illitrates. But for the HIV/AIDS the solution is simple: Just Zip Up (JZU)

I was using 6820 previously but when the dude decided to take an early trip to the graves, I opted to wait for the E70. The same can't be truer for the elections coming up in 2007. Candidates should have volunteers who would be at every polling booths to tally the votes as they are being counted. That is another good way to counter rigging in the next general elections. [More]

I have been facing a challenge of using cfdocument to create very nasty and mean looking reports. After boasting about all CF can do, I guess getting reports out on PDF should be as simple as abc. Alas, I think I boasted one more time too many. The cfdocument rendition of anything apart from simple text is pathetic. It is so buggy that I wonder which Macromedia product manager signed off on it. Landing in Lagos is not guaranteed, but we will end up somewhere in the south. If luck is in our favor, we may even be landing on your village! [More]

When the honchos at work decided to put some business processes on the

its browser saying capital NO. And server side is not the easiest stuff
to do and the roundabout trip could make the sanest man go schizo! [More]
